THE SOCIAL DYNAMIC of the FLO House TM is based on a two-part model: (a) the 'spatially determined opportunities' of a Relative Spatial Depth; and (b) the 'locationally-based opportunities' of Visual Access and Visual Exposure (Choi, 1999).
RELATIVE SPATIAL DEPTH that is shallower creates a greater opportunity for social encounters between the family and their guests. In the FLO House TM the kitchen is the centre, located equidistant from all other points, encouraging interaction and participation by all family members within a domestic setting.
VISUAL ACCESS AND EXPOSURE that is greater causes one to adjust his or her behavior in accordance to the prevailing social context. The openness of the FLO House TM creates its own social context stimulating positive behavior patterns that encourage learning. By night the bedrooms are private spaces created by folding walls; by day the walls are retracted and the whole apartment is opened up.
