Design report Outside in between - a new daechongmaru The nature in Korea is made up of flowing lines: the hills and fields, the villages and
trees that surround us, form a soft natural line. It is this nature our ancestors have been looking at from the aechongmaru the traditional porch of
the old Korean houses. This openess and connection to the outside forms the quality of these houses. In the density of the modern city this
freedom no longer exists. But maybe it is possible to integrate a special zone into the contemporary residential unit which offers the opportunity of
feeling space and openess within the density integrating nature into the urban environment: This could be a new internal aechongmaru In busy
everyday life our home should be a quiet and relaxing space a place which concentrats on the communication within the family. We propose an
introverted configuration of the typical korean residential unit. By shifting the living room and the bedroom appart a new space is created which
fullfills the idea of the new aechongmaru The living room is defined by a kitchen furniture (A), which functions as the communicative center of the
appartment and a flexible media screen (C). The bedrooms are separated from each other by a bedroom furniture (B) which integrates storage
space, some features of the child room and the bath. All these elements being designed in flowing lines have in common that they connect the
three parts of the appartment. The floor is slightly bending establishing different levels as we know it from the traditional korean houses. The living
space is on entrance level and the recreation space 30 cm above. The central space can be integrated differently into the living areas by simply
opening the internal facades. It offers the opportunity to create one own environment. Maybe you like to plant it with flowers or cover its floor with
gravel. The whole unit can be prefabricated and stacked on each other.
