three Member Family, One Child Family
In the 1st and 2nd year, more than 800 pieces of design works were presented. Among them, there were works that applied well to the theme, but there were also those that lacked understanding of the theme. After judging, the four judges, who were Mr.Alexandro Mendini, Mr.Arata Isozaki, Mr. Li Chung Pei and myself, had a long discussion about specifying the theme for the 2nd year on would be, ¡°One Child Family¡±.
The large families of agricultural society became nuclear families with the advent of industrialized society. In the 20th century, the nuclear family expanded into many aspects. As for China, from three0 years ago, there has been a government policy to have only one child. The three member family is the typical form of nuclear family. In the age where large families are becoming a nuclear one, the most common pattern of nuclear family, the One Child Family deserves more special attention.
When we compare the concept of the One Child family in China, Korea, and Japan, we see that more than similarities, there are many more differences. Questions raised were: What will be the plan for a three member family when planning a living unit, what should be the space form for three member family life, what should be the premise when designing the furniture and tools that will fulfill the inner space, and what should be thought of when designing the inner space of the living unit.
In an information oriented society, the life of a family cannot be but based on information. When people moved to cities and mostly came to live in combined living units, the everyday tools of the industrial world were the keys. As electronic devices were introduced to homes, combined living life became possible. The development of elevators also made taller buildings more convenient; such electronic devices made combined living spaces possible.
We should think of other factors besides industrialized electronic devices that can direct the life of a One Child Family in the 21st century. With the advent of electronic devices in industrialized society, the television and radio were put in the living room, and the cooker, oven, refrigerator and washing machine were put in the kitchen. After that, kitchen furniture and appliances were combined to become the Intelligent Kitchen.
There has been continuing trend that industrialized manufactured goods and furniture are combined. The 20th century's urban housing was a mixture of manufactured and traditional furniture products but now we need to reflect on what the urban housing design should be in the intellectual informative society age of the 21st century. We need to think of adding an intellectual and informative aspect to our traditional view of design.
In industrial society, the kitchen was a space for women only but in intellectual informative society, it has become a space for all family members. As for the three member family in the informative society, standing and working in the kitchen need not be labor but rather a memorable time of family life. Now, in intellectual informative society, kitchen culture must also change.
In the three member family, women are not the only ones in control of the kitchen, all three family members work there. The next stage following the intelligent kitchen is the digital kitchen that contains a database of cooking information and other housework.
The interior of each housing unit will be designed for all three family members and each member should be able to make it their own work station, making it possible for them to work within the unit. The One Child Family, we could say, is kind of a family democracy.
A major problem of the three member family is that the child is raised alone. For the most time in a three member family the child experiences a lonely world. Yet, though lonely, information is abundant everywhere. Rather than being alone in a house it is more like a marketplace. Accordingly, to take advantage of this we should think of how the child's room should be designed.
In a One Child Family, there must also be time and space for the couple. The three member family started off from the couple, thus, it should be a space where their privacy can be maintained and where conversation is possible.
Therefore, in deciding on the One Child Family as a theme, the ideas of an informative interior, a creative child room, and a couple's bedroom that allows easy conversation were presented. Following, in order to stimulate ideas one step ahead, some examples will be provided of what is meant by an informative interior, a creative child room, and a couple's bedroom that allows easy conversation. One of the judges, Mr. Alexandro Mendini, designed a creative children's room. Hanssem has developed a ¡°desk and chair that grows with the child¡± since for growing children, furniture must grow together with them. Usually, the child continuously grows but furniture stays the same. With this example of the growing desk and chair we would like to provide the stimulus to change your usual perceptions.

My speech, which included five major compnents, is almost over. Lastly, as a representative member of the judges, I would like to explain to you the goal of ¡°Design Beyond East & West¡± by providing you with the system of judging and the discussions carried out among the judges. I would like to give concrete guidelines to this year's participants by providing information on how we selected the 15 award winning works, the three gold prize winning works, and the one grand prix winning work in terms of the criteria of time, how the theme was understood, and the judges assessment on each of the winning works.
