Born in Korea in 1943, Seok-chul Kim studied architecture and city planning at Seoul National University. Between 1964 and 1969 he worked for the two leading architects, Jung Up Kim and Swoo Geun Kim. Then after working as a foundation member of the Institute of Applied Science at Seoul National University, he established ARCHIBAN Seok Chul Kim & Associates in 1972.

The firm has had numerous commissions both public and private. Notably in 1983 the firm won the international competition for the design of the Seoul Arts Centre. The first stage of the project, the concert Hall was completed in 1988. The second stage, which included the Opera House and Art Gallery, was completed in 1992 and the final stage, the Art School was completed in 1998. More recently the firm designed the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale and the new Buddhist Cultural Complex at Haein-sa and the master plan for the World Ceramic Expo 2001. Many of the firm's designs have received awards such as Grand Prize of Korean Cultural Architectural Award for the Seoul Opera House and the first Korean Architectural Grand Award for the design of the Hanssem Shiwa factory. The firm has also received international recognition for their works, receiving Grand Prize of the Dupont Antron Design Award for the Seoul Arts Centre in 1988, an IMM Design Award in 1999 and an Arcasia Gold Medal for their Moving Image Museum on Cheju Island in 2000.

Seok-chul Kim is at present Dean of Colleges of Architecture at Myongji University and Visiting Professor of Urban Design at I.U.A.V., Venezia, G.S.A.P. Columbia University, New York, and School of Architecture at Tsinghua University, Beijing. He was an organizer of the Anywise conferences and the Aquapolis series of conferences and a director of the International Center Cities on Water. He was editor of Contemporary Architecture magazine and the KIA Journal. His work has been featured in a number of exhibitions in Korea, China, Japan and in Europe and he has also authored a number of books including 'Millennium Architecture: Millennium City' 'Seoul: City of Ethics, City of Nature'. Currently he is involved in various collaborative projects in Europe and China.
