DESIGN DESCRIPTION & REPORT
Creative minds are discovered rather than invented. Children observe, interact, communicate, express, and discover mostly with the minds of the others, especially of their kind: friends. They constantly seek answers to their curiosity. And, through friends their minds grow and thoughts get deepened with astonishment. As for designers it is our responsibility to provide and promote such environment: an environment where children are encouraged to be more independent from the boundary of their parents and to be more interactive with their friends. Hence, the design of inside must always be harmonious with the design of its immediate surroundings.
A room is usually bounded by walls within walls. It is a space within a space, and its outside is just an inside of another space. A child's mind starts to understand this concept of boundaries and definition. He understands that his boundaries are within an enclosure of another bounded space. The child's perceptual world becomes limited, and his immediate world is always the world of the parents.
This project introduces an idea which relieves such limitations and confinement. In this project the child's outer shells are actually meeting the world of outside, but in a safe and romantic way. It is the world of outside but dwells above the world of the parents. This world is closer to the sky and the birds, and yet it is safely protected. Sweet scent of blossoming flowers always wraps around the room. Delightful sound of birds soothes the child's enchanting soul.
It is an independent space just for the child. But then it is closely linked to the others of the same kind: friends. The links create an environment of togetherness. And the collectiveness of their spaces creates a community of their own. It wants to be called 'the Community of Children'.
The world is changing. Regardless of its being in Korea, China, or Japan the transformation accelerates in a new level of velocity. It generates an immense energy. It creates an unstoppable momentum of its own. Identity of each society is vague and indistinct. The world's intension and value are diminishing in the shadow of such force. Our memories get lost and loose the significance in the course. People relentlessly desire for what is newer and what is faster, and of course what is more stimulating. Their minds are constantly occupied and restless. Their needs are blurred and confused by the overflowing information. The velocity of the changing mankind outruns the mind of an individual. Eventually solitude appears to be the best remedy for their exhausted minds. Isolation becomes their only resting place.
Children will grow and try to find their place in this lonely and confused world. Massive quantity of information and technology is surpassing the adequate need for children's natural growth. Their prematuring intellectual growth due to an excessive knowledge will create a broken balance with their body. Just like the adults they will ultimately seek for isolation as their resting place.
Children connect well with each other. Their world seems to give good answers to the problems that they commonly face. Their close friends and neighbors seem to carry more distinction and significance than their nationality and the world through the internet. Their rooms need to be creative and well guarded, but should not be isolated. They should have unbound opportunities to go out and interact with the people of their age.
This community will serve the idea well. This is the most creative space children can find.
