The nowadays housing is a machine designed for function but not for living. Family members only live next to each other but not really live together.
Efficiency always occupies the first priority in Hong Kong. To tackle the design problem of housing, the designers always makes different rooms for various activities in order to suit the needs of occupants in a direct and efficient way. For instance, the bedroom contains the child to sleep, study and surf on internet; the kitchen contains the mother to cook and wash the cutlery efficiently; the living/dinning room contains the family to watch television and have dinner. Each activity is separated by fixed thick walls and carried out in an isolated manner, except the living/dinner room.
The superior role of living/dinning room in the hierarchy of functions is obvious but it is ironic that it does not induce gathering activity while the television programme does. Watching television is hardly the only chance for family members to gather and communicate.
Usually, family members seldom know what the others are doing. When the mother is working hard and tired in the kitchen, the child is busy with the internet games in his/her bedroom. When the parents enjoy the television programme in living room, the child is nervous about the coming examination in his/her room. We do not want to deny the need of privacy but it does emphasize on individualism which results in the separation among family members.
In fact, this issue is more serious in One Child Family due to the unique live pattern of each family member. Suffering from the lack of communication and sharing, misunderstanding is easily resulted and leads to conflicts. This situation harms the psychological and social growth of children.
Potential
The critical point of resolving the said issue maybe how to deal with the dilemma between spatial openness and privacy.
We believe the concept of living together is essential to develop intimate relationship. They really live in one space. They can easily discover what the others are busy with and therefore they can express their concern and offer appropriate help. We also acknowledge that people need to be 'separated' in certain circumstances, such as study, but not isolated. Thus, different scenarios can be achieved by the technology in computerization to suit various needs, especially the need of privacy.
