| Interaction by separation
as each role of the assembled household members is redefined into independent components, the family is in danger of losing it's vital connections. The father continues to maintain his independence through his absence from the home throughout the week. The mother explores her own independence by evolving from keeper of house to keeper of self and family. The newly accepted condition of absence from the home allows for isolation of the one member who does not have the option to abandon the house: the child.
The disengaged family members must rely upon the precious moments in which their daily routines physically cross. It is critical that these precious moments of proximate connections be not spent on further isolation by way of continued independent chores. The family must be able to maintain their privacy without sacrificing connection.
House for a both working parents and a single child calls for a demand of child's independency and parents' privacy. Activities between child and parents should be equally treated and adjacent to each other due to specific activity that has certain time frame of a day. Separating these two programs linearly and make them run parallel through out the time of a day creates an intersecting volume. Their connection is created by this intersecting volume that separates them. This neutral zone has circulation, storages, bathrooms along with tunnel between kitchen and child's playroom. .
The volumes of two apartment units create a square shaped section, which can be mass produced and prefabricated at an off site location. Each unit is identical; when stacked the second unit is flipped, resulting in a level sound surface on both top and bottom of the two combined units. They can then be multiplied in this manner to create even a tower if desired.
The turning forms and strategic assembly of the individual units create terraces for both parents and child. Neighbors can interact, yet maintain privacy by having these terraces at a distance of two floors apart. There are two balconies in each unit; the sloped surface which stems from the floor of the child's playroom can grow short rooted plants and bring nature into the child's quarters for cultivation and recreation. The terrace off of the parent's bedroom can be seen from the windows of the child's playroom.
