We are living in a changing world.

The housing conceibed as an inmutable and indifferent object, in these fast variations is today totaly obsolet. How to change the housing to adapt it according to different changes?

The necesities of a child change through the passing of the time... How to adapt the housing according to the growing of the child?

The father and child relation ships are being disminished becouse of the newly demands How to give an incentive to them?

We are living in abstracs and not differenciated spaces... How to generate a flexible space and, at the same time, let it develope the particular aspects of each individual? How materials, textures, smells, sounds, and light influence people?

The future inhabitant should paticipate in the creation process of their own housing, they should choose every part that become part of their housing, they should become part of it. If that would happen, the housing would be created adjusted to the needings of the user, As a game where the same pieces could become part of infinit objects. The limit between the architecture and the furniture would be deluted conforming a new artefact, individualized, in series and variable according to the wishes of each person.

We propose a sistem conposed by three pieces:

The first one functions as a flexible and modulated container, letting infinite organizations, a neuter soport where different parts live together .

The second one contains and agrups the services, letting the resources and the general functions of the housing be optimazed.

The third one, the child`s space, is conceibed as a place of exchange, where the parents and children share their activities. A space that changes depending of the growing of the children and adapt itself to their necesities.

Comments by juries

Alessandro Mendini : This project, the gold medallist in the contest, described Japanese cultural tradition with the delicacy and sensibility in its designing The outer surface of the building is finished with semi transparent material using pattern system for the basic structure. This helps keeping the privacy of each family member and provides the space for family gatherings at the same time. With a clear understanding of the contest's theme and wants this work is simple yet elegant.

Seok-Chul Kim : Simplistic planar lines and delicate surface finishing are used to give the Japanese feel to it. The contestant put the child space inside, common space in the middle, and expanded space outside and sensibly finished with refined fabric. Compared to the bold outside look inside is somewhat simple and hard to analyze how he organized housing units. Putting the child space in the hall way to the main bed room blocks the variety of children's rooms.

Shigeru Uchida : Uchida applied the essentials of Japanese style housing to modern hosing. One of the characteristics of spacing in Japanese housing is that it does not divide rooms physically. It continuously and visually divides rooms with sensibility. This kind of soft impressions in space is possible with heavy uses of very fragile materials. Certainly the work has the beauty of softness and composed of fabulous screen.

Cui Kai : This is a modern house with a lot of oriental sentiments. Simple planes, visulized space, detailed and exquisite materials draw attention of observers. It fits perfectly with the contest theme and shows the Japanese ways and orders of life in house, how they raises their kids and historical changes it' been through. But its focus on materials is a bit too much and way too simplified in using the space. It seems that no environmental system is actually made for the house and it may well bring the doubts for imitations of others' works. Considering the concept of 'A mix of both eastern and western cultures' I think it's extremely biased to Japanese style.
