How to Get Close to Floor.
1) The Condition & Analysis of the Objects of Living
Culture Study & Design.
Background Along with the extension of social activities,
living space is becoming an area where social activities
take place, beyond the basic concept that it should
provide convenience and comfort. As more functions are
required while the space is limited, it is becoming
more and more saturated. In addition, the introduction
of digital culture has created a more complex and plural
life pattern. The meaning as a space has been already
replaced with the diversity combining several cultures.
Problem The living space of today tends to emphasize
individualism, rather than family bonds. Since weight
is given to one element to accentuate it, residents
are forced to adapt themselves to circumstances. The
fact that residents should adapt themselves to circumstances
generated by the space which does not satisfy individual
taste is just like molding something. They may lose
motivation and get confused. What is needed to overcome
the lack of harmony is to create tension to support
relation and to pursue correlated links.
Solution It is required to analyze individual wishes
of the family members and reach an agreement as to the
factors common to everybody. Continuous changes should
be made to carry out various functions simultaneously.
The space must be vital which contains active energy
and forms uncertain entropy.
2) Design Concept
The New Interpretation of 'Floor' Floor means "the
flat and horizontal surface of a structure" and
"the lower or supporting surface of a structure."
Dictionary definitions like these set limits to our
thought. The purpose of this project is to overcome
such limits and the uncertainty of words and to advance
to its new concept.
The point is to consider floor as the mediator of all
the elements. It is to include related concepts or regard
them in the same light with floor and make sure the
included concepts function properly. It also means not
concentrating on the size or number of space and applying
a holistic view, instead. Interpret floor in a various
view points. Possibility hidden in the surfaces except
contacting one should be exploited. Consideration should
be given to make sure that family spend time together
and talk to each other at home. For this, gravity should
be overcome and dynamic energy provided. It is required
that the number of floors is increased and appropriate
value for each of them is created. The meaning of floor
should be extended to that of integrating spaces.
3) Suggestion Details
Divide space into 6 types or subdivide into 9 types.
Each of them is connected with each other through living
room. Private spaces (child's bedroom & parents'
bedroom) have a common space, a connecting space and
a contacting space and have the nature of openness and
privacy at the same time. The space of multi-meanings
has multi-functions and seeks variety while the common
spaces (living room, kitchen, balcony and bathroom)
guarantee easy access by family members. Create 4 different
floor altitudes, which can be increased when furnishing
is provided. It is suggested not to make the space boring
by ensuring a variety of lines of vision for a broad
range of view and creating cubic effect. Various altitudes
form the frame for furniture and develop more options
in furnishing. They also meet customer needs and tastes
as well as help companies make profit by designing a
wide variety of floorings.
¨ç Living + Kitchen + Balcony
a) Revolving floor.
b) Abundant natural light in a common space.
c) Integration of floor and dining table.
¨è Child's Room
a) Creation of a space of dual meaning.
b) Utilization of living room and floor surface
c) Control of moving light.
d) Moving Wall :
Since it does not have abundant natural light, child's
room should have openness.
¨é Parents' Room
a) Use of stairs as a chest of drawers.
b) Integration of desk and floor.
c) Formation of cubic effect by unifying its altitude
with that of outside floor.
¨ê Bathroom
a) Bathtub installed lower than floor.
b) b) Emphasis given to relaxation.
