4. The World of Architecture - Interior - Furniture

The reason DBEW is divided into three sectors, architecture, interior, and furniture design is because there was a plan for the total design of housing. DBEW narrows its scale from the level of housing to the three sectors of architecture, interior, and furniture, which are the basis of everyday life. That is, rather than looking at the whole picture of housing in general, we tended to concentrate on the living unit, interior and furniture; those that an individual would meet in their everyday life.

During this process, what was important was how to look at the relations between architecture, interior, and furniture. Presenting a living unit plan, or an ordinary person's everyday life's frame, was to be the architectural category. As for the interior, we thought of how things can be differentiated in one living unit.

Building a kitchen, laying out the furniture, adding colors to the living space and filling out with furniture is all about making empty space become more meaningful. The category of architecture is the union of the living units and the assemblage of neighbors, thus one has to bear in mind the relations with other units; whereas for the interior, it is filling out within the unit, so, it is the link within the inside and relations within the inside that must be noted.

Together with the people, furniture is the main guide for the interior. With furniture, the interior gets brightened up and becomes space that is useful. Therefore, furniture is creation within the interior. Furniture is connected to interior, interior is connected to architecture; that is why we required the three sectors of architecture, interior, and design within the design principle.

Architecture or interior design is not just popular in various areas. For example, furniture can be used in many different places, but architecture and interior can only be applied in only one specific place. China, Korea, and Japan, we see the depth and variety of each civilization. Chinese, Koreans and Japanese have inputted their own typical spirit in designing furniture.

Presenting the housing units, and the interior and furniture design styles of the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans, is the means to start identifying the civilized identity of these different places.
