POSSIBLE HOUSE
What is the most important differenc between the only child and other children? As an only child, I think the greatest difference lies in the way they communicate with their family.
In a one-child home, as there are no brothers or sisters, the ones who can talk to the child remain only his/her parents. So, how can we let the children communicate with their parents conveniently and happily? How can we, to create some multiple possible spaces and circumstances, is what I'm always thinking.
In this appartment, the child's and the parents' bedrooms are next to each other, even share a common entrance. The doors' open and shut make them have multiple possibilities: private and public.
The digital object is considered in the design of the child's bedroom too. With the help of a projector and a moveable screen, one wall of the room is designed as a digital wall, where the child can watch multi-channel TV and surf the net. The kitchen and dining rooms are also an important part that is thought of in the house. Everyday the whole family would reunite and communicate here, so, in the other words, this place is gradually becoming a mini culture plaza at home (referring to the mission paper). The kitchen is designed after comprehensively thinking over the completely two different ways of cooking between Chinese and west. There is no problem while cooking in the west way, the kitchen can be fully opened.
But the situation will be quite different while doing the Chinese cooking.
The feature of Chinese cooking is that it will create a lot of oil fume, it is not enough to provide only a kitchen ventilator, it requires the kitchen has to have a window which can open directly to the open air.
And, effective partition should be set between the kitchen and the other rooms so that the oil fume cannot flow into the other rooms. At this time the sliding door and the revolution door can exploit their advantages.
They can be shut completely, this is to fit in with the needs of Chinese cooking.
Also, they can be entirely opened. The outcome is that the kitchen and dining rooms are now united to be one room. An interesting change happened to the space, and multi-possibilities comes again.
By the same analysis, the two sliding doors of the balcony have the similar function. After the doors are opened, the living room and bedroom are united by the balcony. Also, it brings another possibility of the motion pattern in the house.
The built area is another question I'd like to think of in the design. Because this apartment is planed mainly for those young couples with one-child homes, so the parents in these families are about 30 years old. People at this age should be at the starting stage of their career.
So they will not have much income. In the other hand, the house price in China is going higher and higher day by day. So, smaller houses should be welcomed by these young one-child parents.
And too much area may be a waste on the contrary for them too. The built area of the apartment is 57.1m2 (including staircase area).
Only one child, not only one possibility.
